About Ammonia

Ammonia Anhydrous is a chemical compound formed by joining of two chemical, nitrogen and hydrogen. Its compound formula is NH3. Ammonia is majorly produced by Haber-Bosch process, in which the elements, nitrogen and hydrogen, are united at a temperature of 500 to 600 deg C and a pressure of approximately 2900 psi in the presence of a promoted iron catalyst. More then 80% of ammonia is used in fertilizer production. Density of ammonia gas in atmospheric pressure is just half over than air. Ammonia at ambient temperature and pressure is a colorless gas with a very pungent odor. It must be stored and transported under pressure at low temperature. The gas is strongly irritant/corrosive to the skin, eyes and respiratory tract and has toxic properties.

In India there are many companies manufacturing anhydrous ammonia and largest manufacturing capacity of anhydrous ammonia is by Krishak Bharati Cooperative Limited (KRIBHCO), Surat Gujarat.

Ammonia is toxic gas, but can be dissolved easily in water. At certain density in air (i.e. 15% to 28%), it will form flammable and explosive mixture. Proper care and safety procedures should be taken to control the leak of ammonia. Although ammonia itself is toxic, the exhaust gases from the combustion of ammonia and oxygen are not.

It is extremely important to follow proper handling and safety procedures when working with Anhydrous Ammonia.
